My Life in Bangkok

A bit about me…

I moved to Bangkok in 1998. I don’t know whether I truly like this city or not, but I do know that I appreciate the fact that my family is happy here and Thailand has treated us very well over the past 10 years.

This blog is my collection of thoughts, experiences and randomness while I’m living here.

A view of my life in Bangkok.

Happy Reading.

    Wei!

Hey kudos, must say you write really well!

And thanks for update of Bkk situation. Actually I was going to visit on business trip next week, but think I’m going to postpone it nonetheless as coming with colleagues who are a little bit more kiasi…

Shall have to visit the nunnery another day then 🙂 Stay safe…and have you taken your family to the bar of last time yet…since you said it was for older folks hahaha 🙂

    Hi Mel!
Thanks for stopping by. I think the BEST PLACE to buy bakery supplies is this Robinson outlet that’s going bankrupt! haha.
Okay here is how to get there
take the MRT – Silom, or BTS Saladaeng.
Right beside Pan Pacific Hotel is the Robinson Outlet, on the..i think 2nd floor they have a section with SO MANY KITCHEN SUPPLIES, all 80% off! I saw a baking tin for 150 baht! I almost died and went to heaven! good luck with that! 🙂

woah thanks a million! will definitely check it out when i’m there 🙂
just to check is this the place?

so i’ll prolly just grab a tuk tuk to silom robinson is that how i should tell the drivers?

    thanks again!

Yes! it’s the place! wow fantastic you can find it, I think if you can take MRT or BTS then that’s better, telling a tuk tuk driver hmm thats adventurous too, where are you coming from? I just stopped by there today, I saw a cake decorating sifter for 135baht! SHOCKING! but less baking trays, but alot of odds and ends there, like for example a pastry cutter, and measuring cups and spoons, good luck with that and let me know how it goes! 🙂

I like your blog. I feel for a lot of what you say about Bangkok. This is my fourth year of living in the city and I still don’t know if I like it or not. And you’re right…it is so hard to make friends here. I think it is especially difficult for foreign women who are single. Foreign men tend to love it here for a variety of reasons.

I have been living many years in Bangkok and I once had my own bakery in the U.S. Let me say that one of the best areas to find all kinds of baking supplies and some ingredients would be the several baking supply companies almost side-by-side on Rama IV, just a few hundred meters down Rama IV from Sukhumvit on the left-hand side. If you use the Skytrain, just get off at Phra Khanong and cross Rama IV–very short distance. The address of one of these supply places is 4796 Rama 4 Road, and others are within a very, very short walk, which you will see. If you get off the Skytrain at Phra Khanong and feel intimidated crossing Rama IV, there is a walkway over Sukhumvit a short walk down Sukhumvit, which you can see easily from Phra Khanong, that will take you to the side of Rama IV you want to be on.

hi was so glad to have stumbled upon ur blog. I am returning to Bangkok for the third time nw in December. I will b looking to buy clothes for a shoop my daughter is opening in SA. Where would i find good quality designer clothes (not name brand),and not the typical eastern type clothes. many thanks, oh and one other thing where do i find fabric?

    Hi Sue,
Glad I can help you! 🙂 Good quality designer clothes…there are quite a good few in Bayoke Patunam area. The some shops open at 9am, but it’d be safe for you to go a 10 instead. Location-wise, a great hotel to stay in would be Bayoke Sky Hotel, so you could shop, and then if you are tired go back and rest, but December is fantastic weather! Other places to get original designs are places such as the Suan Luang Night Bazaar, Platinum Mall isnt too bad, but things are a bit generic there.
As for Fabric, there is Little India town (Prarurat) and China Town 🙂

    Hi Em,
Thanks for your comment! sorry it’s taken me so long to respond. It’s difficult to make friends definitely but have you found any social meetups? I went to the Bangkok Book Club and loved it, it was great. As for love life, haha, maybe you could try out some Thai men? 😛

    Hi Don!
I relocated to HK, but THANKS SO MUCH for giving me the address of your supplier! I wish I knew earlier! I bought 1 kg of butter for 143 baht in Siam Square, it was amazing! Happy baking! 🙂

    Hi Stacy!

i am from Singapore and I stumble across your blog while searching for “baking supplies in Bangkok”.

I will be in Bangkok end Feb and was hoping to get some cheap baking supplies there. e.g. cupcake liners, cookie cutters, baking trays/tin.

can i check if the Robinsons you mentioned still around? or has it closed down already? Hee
or is there another other baking packaging supplies shop you could recommend that is accessible easily via the MRT or BTS?

Hope to hear from you soon! Cheers!

    Hi Christina!
Sorry for getting back to you so late, Xin Nian Kuai Le! Gong xi fa cai!
I left Bangkok in May last year, so I can’t tell you if the discountplace is open, but you can give it a try?
That is…Sathorn MRT station, and you see a huge Robinsons, there is a Tops Supermarket downstairs, that should be your gauge.

Baking and package supplies, yes, how about you try Siam Square, in one of the sois (sorry I can’t remember) there is a bakery supply shop. All I can say is that if you are walking in from the main street, the shop will be on the left hand side.
That’s SIAM BTS, I’ve also heard that in Rama IV road there are so many baking supplies, but I never found any, and I rather you not go for a wild goose chase. Siam Square would be fun to shop, you can see clothes and accessories, and hopefully stumble in on the baking supply shop!
    Good luck with that! 🙂
