We all scream for ice cream?

Posted by skmkh2002 on April 17, 2009

Dear Readers,

When you live in Bangkok, traffic is a sign of normalcy. All last week, I had the most enjoyable time driving on the roads, hardly any cars on the roads (because who would risk driving out, besides yours truly?), really fabulous driving.

Today, life is back to normal, a busy friday, with friday traffic.  I took Grego to lunch and couldn’t help myself to a McDonald’s softee-ice cream with the chocolate dip. (Personally, I prefer it to Dairy Queen’s because the chocolate coating is much thicker) And I was walking around MBK with this huge icecream cone, happy like a chubby bu bby baby.

That’s how I felt like. A happy chubby bubby baby. And lots of people were giving me quick glances, I’m sure they were all craving for ice cream too. hee hee!

Anyhoo, thank goodness Songkran holiday is over. Monday is a working day and I am definitely welcoming it.

You scream, I scream, We all scream for ice cream? Satisfy your ice cream craving today!
Go ahead and spoil yourself, you deserve it. … or at least…that’s how I rationalise my guilty pleasures.

Chubby and bubby,
Stacy

Bangkok’s 2009 Early Tragedy – Santika’s Inferno

Posted by skmkh2002 on January 9, 2009

Dear Readers,

I am pissed.

I am pissed at the whole situation, and pissed because Jamie lost her friend Win in the Santika tragedy.

Imagine this, December 31st 2008, a Goodbye Santika party, with performance from Joey-Boy and a band called Burn.

Party goers were handed sparklers to celebrate the new year. Santika was a chic happening club, a club where tourist went,  and higher-than-normal folk – society people partied. Outside the club, you could see a line of expensive cars – ferraris, minis, bmws, and mercs. I went there once with Neha, and have to say, I liked it. Yes it was the typical Thai style dance club – with tables on the dancefloor, but there was a little dance floor room near the stage (from what I remember) so any club with a dance floor gets a two thumb approval from me.

But what we really overlook when we do go clubbing, are fire exits, the presence of sprinklers, fire extinguishers, fire alarms, emergency lights…I guess we either assume that nothing bad would happen to us – or – a club would obviously have all these safety measures because they have a club liscence. – right?

That law of logic basically goes to shit in Thailand. That whole list? fire exits…sprinklers..fire extinguishers…- not adequate.

Santika decorated their stage with normal curtains – not fire retardant ones. Fire extinguishers? – One.

Sprinklers? – none that I know of. Fire exits? – 3 but 2 back exits were only known to the staff – not even the fire fighters knew about it.

So what really happened that night? Its a piece by piece put together, but the rough idea was that about around 12:20-35ish the band BURN celebrated the new year by using FIREWORKS (not stage fireworks) on stage, and immediately the ceiling (that was made of soundproof material) caught on fire. Some revellers thought it was even part of the show, but when the ceiling started to fall on them (not a whole chunk at first, more like ashes) a panic broke out. Somehow, people on the 2nd floor realised the fire before people on the ground floor, and everyone was rushing to the main exit, so that some deaths were caused by the stampede.

I read here and there, and one man said he jump kicked the glass windows on the ground floor, and only made a small hole and felt so helpless didn’t know how to get out. Worse – on the 2nd floor the windows had grills.

The fire was further amplified because of the bottles of alcohol on the main dance floor (remember, Thai clubs have bar tables on the dance floor, thats how Thais party, head bobbing and minimal booty shaking around their bar table.) so there were mini explosions from the alcohol bottles.

1,000 people, stampeding out of the 3 storey building, mainly using the 2 metre wide exit.

It took the fire fighters 2 hours to bring the blaze under control. Total – 64 people dead, 240+ injured.

Of the 64, there were 17 bodies that were burnt beyond recognition – charred. When they couldn’t locate Jamie’s friend Win, by the 2nd day, I had a strong gut feeling that it was bad news. His mother had to fly in from Myanmar for DNA testing and they found him, his girlfriend Laika and his friend Mark all near the back exits.

After googling alot about the incident, my mother found a post on thaivisa.com, someone who similarly was missing 4 friends. Then on a facebook group, I saw the same post, but the photo that was shown to look for the missing people did not include Win, so I didn’t think it was him.

Turns out, after giving Jamie the link, she pointed out that the people in the photo included Mark and Laika, but Win wasn’t there (maybe he was taking the photo).

So this was his story:

“We believe the girl was hit by debris from the roof, and her bf tried to help, but either passed out, or he and my bro managed to get her to the rear exit before passing out. Unfortunately, when the rescue teams came, they only went in from the front… As for the last friend, apparently he had already managed to get to safety, but didn’t see any of us, so went back in… He was found in the vicinity of the entrance, only a few meters from the 3…”

He was 26, a MBA student at ABAC, and Jamie’s friend/mentor (in the Debate club) for the past 4 years. He was also Dianna’s close friend, so its devastating for the both of them. I didn’t know him, but I always remember Jamie raving about him, how he is such a nice guy.

And the way he died, trying to save his unconscious girlfriend, most probably being knocked out conscious from the falling ceiling, or succumbing to the clouds of smoke…and the most UPSETTING thing – seeking refuge/hope by circumventing the crowds – going to the back exit and having it overlooked by fire fighters.

I’m PISSED! Pissed at the lack of safety regulations in Thailand. Santika did not hold a club liscence – they only had a liscence to run a food stall. FOOD STALL. Bribery is how they got away with it, probably paying police/inspectors 100,000 baht a month (at least).  In total, Santika made an estimate of 60 million baht per year in revenue.

This is how Thailand works – its called systemic corruption – corruption that is more than just one bar owner and one tainted cop, its a whole SYSTEM of police, government regulators and business owners. I recently spoke to a friend who opened a pub/restaurant near her home. I asked her if she had proper liscencing, and she told me quite frankly that she doesn’t, she knows a high police official in that area, and so pays a bribe of 1,000 baht per month to the police.

1,000 baht, can you believe that?

Days like this I am very disgusted to live here, and there is a facebook group that now shares places to boycott and be aware of when clubbing. Here is a link showing the fire exits for a popular gay club called DJ STATION : Look at this crazy ladder exit.

You know, I was watching Oprah’s Best Life – the Spiritual episode, and one interviewer said he was stuck in an airplane crash -Dante’s Inferno and he saw aura lights leaving the passengers’ bodies. Some were bright some were dim, each aura had a different strength to it. I’d like to think that Jamie’s friend Win’s aura left very bright, just from the photos that I saw of him, all the posts his friends wrote about him, and stories from Jamie and Grego, I know that he was a fun loving individual, always caring and selfless – this was especially illustrated at his heroic attempt to save his girlfriend – it is a damn dirty shame that the back exit wasn’t adequate for them to be rescued.

May all the victims of Santika’s inferno find peace in their afterlife, know that they have touched many lives and are deeply missed,
Stacy

Lucy strikes again!

Posted by skmkh2002 on July 29, 2008

Dear Readers,

Living in a small community, I have to blog about the most recent gossip circulating.

This is a warning letter to all pet owners, and parents with young children in Villa Nakarin, Bangkok.

Satan’s spawn- AKA Lucy (our ex-neighbour dog), the mix Alsatian-devil dog that attacked Perdy 3 times. She just became murderer. Lucy murdered 2 toy dogs yesterday at 5pm.

See, Lucy thankfully moved 2 streets down, but still gets walked around the community. All dogs are usually walked at 6 (to avoid Lucy, our babies go out at 4:30pm). Around 5pm Perdy was whining and barking, wanting to go out, but I just hushed her.

Imagine if she sensed Lucy and was trying to save the other dogs, how bad of me!

Back to the story..

Lucy broke free from her leash, pounced on those toy dogs – Chihuahua – and RiPPED out one’s belly and broke the other’s neck!!! The security guards rushed over and tried to pull them apart and stop the fight. When they were able to separate the fight, the two chihuahuas were murdered. Can you imagine, RIPPED OUT his BELLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lucy must have missed the taste of blood (her last attack was in March) and those two innocent chihuahuas were easy victims.

They were also Perdy’s and Gizmo’s friends.

Anyways I propose the motion: Villa Nakarin should sentence Lucy to first degree murder.

She has a serious track record, and my poor Perdy is suffering from mental anxiety now, she doesn’t like to step out of our house bounds. (Before she was the adventurer(sp?) remember? )

Let’s hope that Lucy’s Mother will be socially responsible and make the right decision.

So please RIP the baby chihuahuas, I feel extremely sad for the family, they just moved in and rented the houses at the side of the lane – I think they are from Europe.

*BREAKING NEWS* *BREAKING NEWS* *BREAKING NEWS* *BREAKING NEWS*
Oh! News just in, Lucy’s walker (Anna’s maid) was chatting on her mobile phone and Lucy saw her victims and ran to them. About the aftermath – the police came to Lucy’s house, and LEFT. meaning that maybe ANNA (Lucy’s mother) bribed them! How great it is to live in a corrupted society, where criminals including DOGS roam freely. So much for being responsible.

Stacy

Photos of our darlings:

This is a photo we took of Gizmo when there was commotion outside, look how scared he looks.

This is Perdy listening to music (we were studying on the dining room table and brought the speakers downstairs.)

Days when I hate living in this hell hole

Posted by skmkh2002 on June 30, 2008

Dear Readers,

I was so pissed today that I was close to tears.

Jeab, Angela and I went for dinner at Central World, and like a good girl I started to head home at ten pm. Guess what, we stood at the taxi stand for 20 minutes, no queue. So when a taxi comes over, we are like wild mobs going towards the cab asking whether they can take us or not.

And yours truly lives in the most outskirt part of Bangkok, hence it is hell getting a taxi. We got fed up and walked towards the front of the building (not the taxi stand) to hail down a taxi (mind you it was drizzling) and Jeab managed to wave down a taxi and before I could interject and say “Rama 9″ she told him my real address “Prawet” and he shook his head violently and put the pedal to the medal and drove off. We had such a howling laughing session because Jeab said that when she said prawet it looked as if he saw a ghost. LOL (im actually laughing now as I’m typing and Angela keeps on asking me, what what what?? hahahahaa)

No, I’m not deceiving the cab driver, Rama 9 (Rama = King, so its King 9 Street) is a WAY to go to my house, once we reach Rama 9 road, we go down to the end of it (around 5KM) and then towards the motorway for another 10KM and then get off an exit and after 1KM i’m home. So it is Rama 9 – the Rama 9 Motorway. HAhaha. anyways thats what we say.

Okay so imagine now we are standing in the rain for 5 minutes, and all 3 taxis we hail down run away from us (even when we changed the location to Jeab’s centrally located house) So I have a great idea to cross the street, we cross the “PEDESTRIAN WALK” (which is basically like playing russian roulette) and we hail down a taxi that pushes a “200 BAHT RIDE” ghetto cardboard in our face. At that point im so frustrated that we get in, and say okay drop Jeab off then go home to my place. To which he calculates it will cost FOUR HUNDRED BAHT. F U Mother @#&(*@& bastard. The meter would only cost me 180.

So here I am extremely pissed and walking in the rain for 3 minutes to the nearest skytrain. Now I have to take the BTS + MRT then Cab home. And what Angela and Jeab said is very correct, its really a state of mind, so I could had chosen to just shrug it off and say no big deal. But instead, I was like, fuck this shit! I hate this fucking place and the only reason why I’m here is because of family, I would never choose to live in this mismanaged chaotic dirty fake city. Can you imagine, in the overpass they have a sheltered pathway with RAILS as roofs, not actual roofs. This just intensified my anger, because the rain was pouring down and I’m walking on a semi covered overpass and the rain is hitting my glasses.

This whole weekend I had Jeab and Angela and Don tell me to socialise more, and expand my social circle because living in a bubble is not healthy. Incidents like today illustrate exactly why I choose to be a hermit.

Life is simply not accessible. To go home I have to overcome so many hurdles and at the end of the day its really just not worth it. Its not worth the time money and stress thats imposed on my parents and myself, that the idea of not going home with my parents when work finishes just really turns me off. And I’m not a nice person I don’t get along with people. I’m like perdy a big old grouch.

Quite upset and my weak heart is beating fast so I better stop typing and do something else like meditate to soothe my thoughts.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrr,
Stacy

Insomnia is back

Posted by skmkh2002 on June 24, 2008

Dear Readers,

Funny thing is that I wanted to sleep at 9pm today, its 12 midnight and I’m blogging.
Great stuff.

Here are my two little friends at home: Gizmo’s paw is over Perdy’s paw in this photo, so shes one angry grandma. (shes 70 and he is 7.)

They are really precious aren’t they, I don’t particularly like the name Gizmo, so I’ve been trying to rename him, I really love the name Mr.P! because he pees alot, and also because P can stand for so many things, like sometimes he is Mr. Prince, Mr. Sweet Pea, Mr. Precious, he needs a royal name like Dudley.

I put my playlist on random, and just heard – “I need a Hero” which sparked me doing air punches, and now listening to – “Give me hope Joanna” – so now im boogie-ing and typing at the same time.

Life is good despite my really bad insomnia. You don’t know how badly I want to sleep but I can’t my mind is wired. Today I lost my voice during a meeting, been down with a cold and a dry cough. Very different from my cough last year – not as severe. But it was quite funny because I had my sexy morning voice for the first 20 mins of the meeting, my voice croaked and I had to ask Don to help me finish. Classic.

Angela is coming over this weekend!!! Its going to be really good catching up with her, but my room is a MESS, Mom says, “all I can say is…OH MY GOD.” hahaha. There are 4 people that I regret not meeting, not squeezing in time to see them during my jam packed trip to spore, and whom I feel sad for not meeting – Angela, Liang Yi, Kym and Maurice. So I am extremely happy that Angela is coming down to visit Jeab and me. Its going to be all about girly bonding time.

Everyone is asking me about the riots in Bangkok. THERE ARE NONE. or, at least none close to me. No riots, but mobs. and they use women police to be the first line of barracade because they think that thai men will respect them and not push. Don’t they realise that thai men are such perverted freaks that they’d probably reach across and squeeze a boob?

haha. okok that was uncalled for. I apologise. Not all thai men are perverted freaks. a large majority are perverted though.

Cheering for the minority of decent thai gentlemen out there, you my friends are a dying breed!!! Where are you, and can I have your number?

Your resident insomniac,
Stacy

A Slutty Tourist

Posted by skmkh2002 on June 13, 2008

Dear Readers,

I have somewhat good news – I’m 59.5kgs today! Which hmm, might seem huge to alot of you, but it means I beat the 60 mark! (that damn thing haunted me to one and a half a year) So I am just 4 kgs away from my target goal. But to be honest, I don’t know where it will come off, I’m quite happy with myself now.

Anyways, felt fab this morning, so decided to wear a halther neck top, you know, a strapless top with a string that I can tie behind my neck? I bought it from Jaspal (thai brand – extremely ironic)

Anyhoo, the point I was getting at, is that today when I was on the MRT, I totally realised that I dressed for the wrong city, no one in thailand wears tank tops, spaghetti straps, or strapless tops!! I was so…not embarassed..more like, I felt really out of place, I’ve become accustomed to feeling comfortable in clothes like this in SINGAPORE. Thus, I dressed for the wrong city.

I was having lunch with Don today, and told him how I just realised that no woman shows skin here, and I how felt like such a slutty tourist! (thats what people think of me when they saw me today. Don and Jeab agreed)

This is a clear example of my bubble life ->Not knowing the cultural boundaries. I felt quite bad that I was so unaware and culturally insensitive, as in I don’t have the proper concept of Thai norms.

Sincerely hoping I do not make any more cultural blunders,
Your Slutty Tourist du Jour,
Stacy

Blogging in the Middle of Nowhere

Posted by skmkh2002 on June 12, 2008

Dear Readers,

I am so upset with myself, because I really wanted to drive to my sales presentation today, but backed out last minute because the location seemed so ulu (out there) and what if I got lost or something?

Location was definitely out there, but an EASY out there, and I just wasted 300 baht. And Going down to the office will cost me another 300 baht. Geez. This is an expensive presentation to make.

I think all my life I’ve lived in the outskirts of town – and let me tell you this. I sincerely hate it. And, I don’t usually blog much about living in Bangkok (because I don’t live in Bangkok, I live in ‘a bubble of home’.) this past week, with our driver taking a ridiculous sick leave, and with my parents being in HK, I’ve had to face the world and take public transport.

Ick.

10 Reasons why public transport sucks in Bangkok
1. The buses don’t stop for you to get on or get off (alight).

2. The motorcycle taxis are scary stuff – especially for a woman. Women have to sit like how we used to ride horses – with both legs angled at one side. So you are basically balancing to stay on the motorcycle with your bum and you cannot hold onto the taxi driver because….you don’t want to touch him. (I took a motorcycle taxi ONCE to Neha’s house, it was a 2 minute ride and I think I almost died.)

3. The MRT smells like pee. (I’ve been having to take this MRT for the past week, I’m practicing the art of holding my breathe)

4. The BTS is this long, so wherever you stand at the platform it always seems not to be at the right place and you have to run down (or up) to the nearest door.

5. The BTS and MRT are limited – so places like where I live don’t have access to.

6. There is no joint public transport payment system like HK’s Octopus or Singapore’s EZ link card. NO EASY LINK. To take the MRT and BTS you need separate cards (I have to confirm, but this is how I feel it is).

7. Taxis smell. There is this distinctive smell of germ, that makes you want to gag.

8. Taxi uncles are sometimes too friendly and hugely creepy.

9. Actually getting a taxi to take you somewhere is close to a miracle. most of the time they won’t take you there because its too far, or not enough time.

10. Not to mention that before you get on the cab, you have to open the door and ask if they will take you there – 很像做鸡喔!

Oh! Joy is here, I have to go. But here in the lobby of TVdirect they are playing a movie I’ve never seen before it is dubbed in Cambodian but the receptionist put on the subtitles for me. Benjamin Bratt, James DeFranco AND Joseph Fiennes – yay! I think today is going to be a great day.

They are soldiers in some jungle, always a hot thing to watch on a Thursday morning,
Stacy
