Happy Birthday Dianna!

Posted by skmkh2002 on January 31, 2009

Dear Readers,

It’s 3:22 am, tonight I went to Dianna’s birthday gathering, so just wanted to write a few lines before I sleep.

My darling darling friend Dianna, with her it is nothing but good times and howling laughter. I really really love her. I’m guilty of recoiling in my hermit shell, and thus not seeing her much, but she still keeps on trying to pull me out (and succeeds.) so hurrah for her. Thank goodness for her.

Let me see, I think the funniest memory I have with her, was in Pizza Hut, our friend’s Tum’s birthday lunch (this was 8 years ago) and I kept on pronouncing his name as Tum not Ddaauum (the proper pronounciation, to this day I still can’t pronounce it) and she and I just kept on rolling on the floor, roaring laughing about it, because she said, “Stacy! Its not like TUM’s stomach pills!” hahahahah

Such a random thing to laugh about, or, when she was dating a guy named Pap, and when she told me, I said, “wait…his name is Pap as in PAP SMEAR???” Lol. SO funny.

Anyhoo, it was her birthday party so I made an effort to actually step out of my bubble to attend her gathering at LONG TABLE.  Mom and Dad were so supportive of me this time, they actually let me drive the car out! (Hurrah!!!) It is the best feeling in the world, being stuck in traffic and belting(or is it belching?)  out Pop lyrics. I love car dancing/seat dancing, the best way to burn 50 calories in 30 minutes. My faves song to sing : Sign sealed delivered. Stevie Wonder. Fun stuff.

Long table is really nice! I was fairly impressed.  The music is good, but its a lounge atmosphere, so even more seat dancing. Dianna’s table was on the balcony, it was windy (a couple of times, dust flew in my eye, eek!)  and the view was nice, the view also showed Bangkok’s major pollution problem. The sky was blurry and hazy, not to a hazardous extent, but visibly bad. All her friends were nice to get along with, which was a huge relief. Oh! And they played this drinking game “Never ever” or something like that.

Do you know what? I first learnt of that game from the new Beverly Hills 90210! (hides head in shame)

omg, THANK GOODNESS for Silver’s slumber party when Kelly was away trying to patch up things for Dylan! (she played Never Ever with Naomi and Annie)

So I guess you are suppose to say, Never Ever…*insert some raunchy/exposing statement* so that you can OUT people and make them drunk at the same time. Ugh…really not my thing, so I was the lame one saying, “I never ever fell down before,” and “I never ever tied my shoe laces”  That’s right, I rather get people drunk free of charge, no embarassing statements needed.

And she had the most creamy Strawberry Shortcake. I’m talking serious cream, I think for the 1 pound cake, they must had used 2 cartons of fresh whipping cream. I thoroughly enjoyed my 800 calorie slice of cake. :)

Do you know there are some girlfriends(friends who are girls) that always bring laughter and love into your life? That’s Dianna for me. Thank you my dearest Dianna for being such a great loving friend.

Happy Birthday Dianna!
Love,
Stacy

Pre-Chinese New Year Haircuts

Posted by skmkh2002 on January 24, 2009

Dear Readers,

As a custom, I went to have my hair cut before Chinese New Year. Lately its been very dragging and huge, so much so that I usually hide it in a pony tail.

Meeting my hairdresser is always a joy, especially since I’ve lost weight. Today he complimented that I look prettier! and have a nicer body shape (thank you!). And because of this weight loss, I was FINALLY able to layer my hair so that my long bangs end mid-cheek. I was a bit shocked when he proposed to layer my hair starting that point,

Stacy: Really? Will it look pretty? (in my ghetto speak thai)

Hair Dresser: Yes! You can do it now because you are skinnier.

Wah..fabulous.

He always has something nice to say, just like a few months ago, when he noticed that I was no longer pregnant. I can so vividly recall him saying: “You have no more….*handmotion over his stomach like a baby bump* baby!”

When he was cutting my hair I told him he could go shorter, like around my shoulder?..and he happily just cut cut cut away. I should really be more vocal. I felt like saying , “Hey Buddy. enough is enough!” But instead, I sat there biting my bottom lip.

He cut away all my curls, but he gave my hair some movement, so it looks somewhat wavy? I guess that was what he was going for.

And as he was just about finished blow-drying my hair he says, “hmm…not pretty.”

HE ACTUALLY SAID THAT! <– lol, WHAT!?!?!?!

He says my personality suits curls more, and asks me to come back for the ultimate hairkiller – 3 hours of perming and highlighting. (double duty damage!) all for 3,500baht!

But I like my hair, its different than the usual mane I wear, and I’ve lived with curls for the past 2 years, so I suppose it’s time for something new. But then again…after dinner I couldn’t stand it, took out my curling iron and gave myself loose ringlets again.

hmm…

Anyways, cheers to the Year of the Ox and for new beginnings!

And finally…people are not nice just for the sake of it..

Posted by skmkh2002 on January 22, 2009

Dear Readers,

Okay put Gizmo back in his cage to sleep. So am free to type about my other story of today.

So I was doing my SIX set of shoulder raises (my trainer is a bit hardcore) and then:

Trainer: Stacy you are looking great, your shape is different now, never mind the weight you look good.

Stacy: Really? you think so?

Trainer: Yes you look good already, maybe it will take you 3 months to lose more weight, but you don’t need to

Stacy: say what?? 3 months?? hmm…okay…

Trainer: After this, you should give me a STEAK

Stacy: :) …. *counting my reps*

Trainer: you know a Steak dinner, maybe some Jazz music…and some beer…

Stacy: :) * 13…14…15…* sure.

!?!?!?

I mean….what am I suppose to say!?!?! I guess I do owe him a dinner for all his help for the past few weeks…

ugh incredibly cringe worthy.  eeeee!!!

So…finally all this nice training thing comes down to a dinner blackmail. I am somewhat incredibly disappointed, are people no longer nice just for the sake of it?

still cringing!! and a bit tempted to put back on some weight!

Capoiera..or not..

Posted by skmkh2002 on January 22, 2009

Dear Readers,

So today was somewhat ‘exciting’ because I was going to partake in my first capoiera lessons in Bangkok with Dianna.

Except – she could only meet after 630ish, and the class was scheduled to start at 5, but I was quite proactive and independent about the whole thing, I decided to go there earlier.

Called Dianna’s friend who is taking the class, and turns out that…1. its a practice session at Queen Sirikit Park, and …2. he isn’t going today.

So my option was to go to the front area of Queen Sirikit, see a bunch of men (strangers) playing Capoeira and join them…or just have another kick ass session at the gym.

I chose to kick ass at the gym instead.  The thought of meeting more capoeira instructors just makes me cringe, yes I know I shouldn’t generalise the matter…but I know 2 ’special’ instructors and I just remembered one of their names! Chris!! Forgetting his name was bugging me the whole day. (he is super pervy)

But on another note, for people in Bangkok looking for a friendly, and very affordable group to learn Capoeira with, this group meets on Saturdays at Time Square (time unknown, but i could ask for you) and it only costs 200baht per session! Soo cheap! then on Tuesdays and Thursdays they get together to practice Capoeira at the park for free.

I know its a good sport, but I am more of a Muay Thai girl, (I am determined to take lessons in 2009!!)

Oh and last pointer I just have to share, is that more than 50% of the time, books at Kinokuniya are cheaper than Asia Books! Asia Books is a rip off joint! The same book that costs 294 baht at Kinokuniya costs 495 in Asia Books. No special discounts at Kinokuniya. I can’t believe it! And the same thing happened to my mom last week, 495 as opposed to 325 at Kinokuniya!

ugh Gizmo wants me to hold him, he is on the bed, walking onto my lap.

Can’t type.

Burned

Posted by skmkh2002 on January 20, 2009

Dear Readers,

On Sunday I burned myself  both emotionally and literally.

I was putting the lasagna in the oven, and was lazy… didn’t fully bend down to slide it in, and my arm touched the (oven and now I am branded. Fabulous, the scar is around 1.5 inch long, and I think its going to take me around 2 years (hopefully) to recover from it. Sigh… It doesn’t hurt so much, but today I accidently brushed it and the blister popped and now it’s sore and ugly.

On Saturday night, I had a really vivid dream, that somehow was a premonition (but with a different ending of course),  Andrea says I’m a bit psychic.

Yesterday, I was looking through my bookmarked guitar tabs, and found Will Young’s “Love is a Matter of Distance” one of my fav songs from…the early 2000s?

I don’t know why he doesn’t have a music video, here is a weird KTV video of the song I found on youtube. Wrong lyrics too.

When my heart is open, My mind is hoping to find
I can’t let you stay, love is a matter of difference
You are too far away”

But, love is apparently a matter of distance, and I am too far away…

*sigh* :(

wallowing,
Stacy

I love myself today

Posted by skmkh2002 on January 15, 2009

Dear Readers,

I realised today that I really love myself today, not like yesteryears. Consequently, I’ve had Bif Naked’s chorus on repeat in my head:

”I love myself Today NOT LIKE Yesterday, I’m COOL I’m CALM, I’m gonna be okay uhuh!

uh huh, I like that chorus.

Anyways, it takes adversity/conflict to realise how much my outlook on life has changed. I beat my destination addiction! (see: my previous self)

I mean, yes I have that weight loss goal, but at the same time, I am perfectly content at the size I am now, I’m a size 4! I don’t really need to be a size 3!

Thank you to all of you who have constantly supported me and told me that I never needed to lose weight.

I kicked my destination addiction! YAY!!!!!

Happy to be living in the present,
Stacy

PS Sorry for the self-centre post ;P

PSS(or is it PPS?) – My new happiness score is 25! up 2 points! Take the quiz here

Never Too Old – A lesson to learn – A nightmare to experience.

Posted by skmkh2002 on January 13, 2009

Dear Readers,

Mom read this brief news to me, I immediately cut it out of the newspaper, and it’s going in my notebook of randoms.

*clears throat* Ladies and Gentlemen, let me share with you this story…

Never Too Old
REUTERS, Beijing
2009/01/13

A 107-year-old Chinese woman who was afraid to marry when she was young, has decided to look for her first husband and hopes to find a fellow centenarian so they will have something to talk about, a Chinese paper reported.

Wang Guiying is worried she is becoming a burden to her aging nieces and nephews since breaking her legs when she was 102 and having had to stop doing chores like washing her clothes.

“I am already 107 and still haven’t got married,” the Chongqing Commercial Times quoted her saying.

“What will happen if I don’t hurry up and find a husband? My nephews and nieces are getting older and their children are already tied up with their own families and I am becoming more and more of a burden,” Ms Wang told the newspaper.

***

Wow I don’t know whether that is inspirational or …an eye opener.

If you have a grandpa who is a centenarian living in China, or willing to relocate to Chongqing, play matchmaker!

There are things that I really admire about Ms. Wang, like for example:

  • I want to live pass 107,
  • I can’t imagine she still did chores when she was 102 (Well done.)
  • I should learn from her and be optimistic about meeting people.

But at the same time, I don’t envy her position.

*puts hands in  prayer position and chants please don’t let this be future me… please don’t let this be future me*

nervously biting my nails,
Stacy

Ooooh, I just googled her name!

Santika’s Inferno – More Insight

Posted by skmkh2002 on January 9, 2009

Dear Readers,

I found this 2 accounts of what happened at Santika that night: Lights were shut off and everyone was scrambling in pitch darkness with suffocating smoke. No emergency lights.

A post by a Singaporean: detailed account plus actual photos of sparklers given in the club (A Must Read)

Another user Vince gives his account

I appreciate them sharing what really happened,

In shock,
Stacy

Bangkok’s 2009 Early Tragedy – Santika’s Inferno

Posted by skmkh2002 on January 9, 2009

Dear Readers,

I am pissed.

I am pissed at the whole situation, and pissed because Jamie lost her friend Win in the Santika tragedy.

Imagine this, December 31st 2008, a Goodbye Santika party, with performance from Joey-Boy and a band called Burn.

Party goers were handed sparklers to celebrate the new year. Santika was a chic happening club, a club where tourist went,  and higher-than-normal folk – society people partied. Outside the club, you could see a line of expensive cars – ferraris, minis, bmws, and mercs. I went there once with Neha, and have to say, I liked it. Yes it was the typical Thai style dance club – with tables on the dancefloor, but there was a little dance floor room near the stage (from what I remember) so any club with a dance floor gets a two thumb approval from me.

But what we really overlook when we do go clubbing, are fire exits, the presence of sprinklers, fire extinguishers, fire alarms, emergency lights…I guess we either assume that nothing bad would happen to us – or – a club would obviously have all these safety measures because they have a club liscence. – right?

That law of logic basically goes to shit in Thailand. That whole list? fire exits…sprinklers..fire extinguishers…- not adequate.

Santika decorated their stage with normal curtains – not fire retardant ones. Fire extinguishers? – One.

Sprinklers? – none that I know of. Fire exits? – 3 but 2 back exits were only known to the staff – not even the fire fighters knew about it.

So what really happened that night? Its a piece by piece put together, but the rough idea was that about around 12:20-35ish the band BURN celebrated the new year by using FIREWORKS (not stage fireworks) on stage, and immediately the ceiling (that was made of soundproof material) caught on fire. Some revellers thought it was even part of the show, but when the ceiling started to fall on them (not a whole chunk at first, more like ashes) a panic broke out. Somehow, people on the 2nd floor realised the fire before people on the ground floor, and everyone was rushing to the main exit, so that some deaths were caused by the stampede.

I read here and there, and one man said he jump kicked the glass windows on the ground floor, and only made a small hole and felt so helpless didn’t know how to get out. Worse – on the 2nd floor the windows had grills.

The fire was further amplified because of the bottles of alcohol on the main dance floor (remember, Thai clubs have bar tables on the dance floor, thats how Thais party, head bobbing and minimal booty shaking around their bar table.) so there were mini explosions from the alcohol bottles.

1,000 people, stampeding out of the 3 storey building, mainly using the 2 metre wide exit.

It took the fire fighters 2 hours to bring the blaze under control. Total – 64 people dead, 240+ injured.

Of the 64, there were 17 bodies that were burnt beyond recognition – charred. When they couldn’t locate Jamie’s friend Win, by the 2nd day, I had a strong gut feeling that it was bad news. His mother had to fly in from Myanmar for DNA testing and they found him, his girlfriend Laika and his friend Mark all near the back exits.

After googling alot about the incident, my mother found a post on thaivisa.com, someone who similarly was missing 4 friends. Then on a facebook group, I saw the same post, but the photo that was shown to look for the missing people did not include Win, so I didn’t think it was him.

Turns out, after giving Jamie the link, she pointed out that the people in the photo included Mark and Laika, but Win wasn’t there (maybe he was taking the photo).

So this was his story:

“We believe the girl was hit by debris from the roof, and her bf tried to help, but either passed out, or he and my bro managed to get her to the rear exit before passing out. Unfortunately, when the rescue teams came, they only went in from the front… As for the last friend, apparently he had already managed to get to safety, but didn’t see any of us, so went back in… He was found in the vicinity of the entrance, only a few meters from the 3…”

He was 26, a MBA student at ABAC, and Jamie’s friend/mentor (in the Debate club) for the past 4 years. He was also Dianna’s close friend, so its devastating for the both of them. I didn’t know him, but I always remember Jamie raving about him, how he is such a nice guy.

And the way he died, trying to save his unconscious girlfriend, most probably being knocked out conscious from the falling ceiling, or succumbing to the clouds of smoke…and the most UPSETTING thing – seeking refuge/hope by circumventing the crowds – going to the back exit and having it overlooked by fire fighters.

I’m PISSED! Pissed at the lack of safety regulations in Thailand. Santika did not hold a club liscence – they only had a liscence to run a food stall. FOOD STALL. Bribery is how they got away with it, probably paying police/inspectors 100,000 baht a month (at least).  In total, Santika made an estimate of 60 million baht per year in revenue.

This is how Thailand works – its called systemic corruption – corruption that is more than just one bar owner and one tainted cop, its a whole SYSTEM of police, government regulators and business owners. I recently spoke to a friend who opened a pub/restaurant near her home. I asked her if she had proper liscencing, and she told me quite frankly that she doesn’t, she knows a high police official in that area, and so pays a bribe of 1,000 baht per month to the police.

1,000 baht, can you believe that?

Days like this I am very disgusted to live here, and there is a facebook group that now shares places to boycott and be aware of when clubbing. Here is a link showing the fire exits for a popular gay club called DJ STATION : Look at this crazy ladder exit.

You know, I was watching Oprah’s Best Life – the Spiritual episode, and one interviewer said he was stuck in an airplane crash -Dante’s Inferno and he saw aura lights leaving the passengers’ bodies. Some were bright some were dim, each aura had a different strength to it. I’d like to think that Jamie’s friend Win’s aura left very bright, just from the photos that I saw of him, all the posts his friends wrote about him, and stories from Jamie and Grego, I know that he was a fun loving individual, always caring and selfless – this was especially illustrated at his heroic attempt to save his girlfriend – it is a damn dirty shame that the back exit wasn’t adequate for them to be rescued.

May all the victims of Santika’s inferno find peace in their afterlife, know that they have touched many lives and are deeply missed,
Stacy
